The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $2.2 million five-year grant (Tuesday, June 28) to Sid Das, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso to battle the Giardia lamblia parasite. The parasite lodges in a person’s small intestine, creating abdominal discomfort. The bug is found around the world, including the U.S.-Mexico border, and is ingested through dirty drinking water, unwashed fruits or vegetables, or in unsanitary lakes and streams. Das and his team want to learn about the molecules that protect the parasite so new drugs can be developed to kill the organism.
