On Jan. 23, the Texas Department of Transportation started reconstruction on Alameda Highway between Boone Street and Concepcion Street. That portion of Alameda is in the heart of the MCA campus. Construction will affect the areas surrounding University Medical Center (UMC), Paul Foster School of Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center clinics, the El Paso Children's Hospital, Jefferson High School, Silva Magnet High School and several businesses. It is a $6.7 million improvement project scheduled for completion a year from now.
Upon completion of the project, all major utility lines will have been replaced, adding additional turning lanes and center islands will have been added, and the street will be finished with concrete paving. Planned improvements include:
- Dual left hand turning lanes from Alameda onto Raynolds
- Replacement of all water supply lines
- Replacement of all storm water and sanitary sewer lines.
- Natural gas supply lines have already been replaced.
- Replacement of all street lighting
- A larger, more modern bus stop shelter with an automatic ticket vending machine and an electronic display that shows when the next bus arrives, and WiFi.
- Updated landscaping along the length of the project
- Paving with concrete instead of asphalt, providing a smoother, more durable finish.
